Streamside is a fifteen-home development outside Sun Valley, Idaho. Our client purchased an undeveloped parcel at the Valley Club, an existing residential golf community. His vision was to develop one-story, 2,500 square foot homes with attached garages, grouped around and sharing a common natural landscape featuring ponds and meandering streams. The house sites were established during an earlier platting process; each home is limited to a platted 99 foot diameter circle.
The prototype design is a simple 60 foot by 40 foot rectangular form. The house is bisected on its long axis by a "feature wall"; this wall clearly defines and separates public living spaces from private bedroom spaces. The "feature wall" is a continuous element extending from the entry courtyard through the residence out to the terrace at the opposite end of the house. The home, slightly raised above surrounding grade, is grounded with its concrete plinth.
Upon arriving at the guest parking area, one first enters into the walled entry courtyard. This semi-private space creates a private outdoor area, secluded from neighboring properties. The courtyard serves as a transition space from exterior to interior.
Entering the house through a short entry hall, one enters the Great Room - a large open space for living and entertaining. Two sides of the space feature floor-to-ceiling windows with views out to the landscaped common area and the mountains beyond. A 16-foot lift-and-slide door system opens out onto a wrap-around terrace. At the near end of the room is the kitchen with adjacent large pantry. A projecting bay, glazed on three sides, provides space for informal dining. A door to the terrace provides convenient access to the barbecue and outdoor dining. The formal dining area occupies the center of the Great Room while the living area with its large wood burning fireplace anchors the end of the room. Given the large expanse of windows and glazed doors, views of the surrounding mountains and natural light bring the outdoors inside, making the house feel large and open.
Stepping through the "feature wall", one finds the master suite adjacent to the living area. The suite features a generously sized bedroom, dressing area, and master bath. The bedroom opens onto its own private terrace.
Two additional bedrooms with private baths, laundry, and garage access are located off the entry hall on the private side of the "feature wall".
A large hip roof with four foot overhangs provides covered areas on the terrace and shade during the summer months.
