Lindvall A & D was commissioned to design a residential development south of the city of Växjö, near the edge of lake Växjösjön. The main benefits of the site are its lakeside surroundings – offering both privacy and west-facing sunsets – and its proximity to the city centre.
The main objective of the project, which currently remains unrealised, was to create something that is unique to Växjö. There are quite a few new developments in the area, so both the client and the architect wanted to create a project that felt unique and exclusive. The entire development was to be built in wood, to not only follow the local vernacular, but also to signify the important role of wood in the local industry. Småland is one of the country's main regions for forestry, and the local university even offers courses in the design and construction of wood buildings.
The plan consists of a row of 12 apartments, ranging from 81-167 m2, and a block of 28 apartments from 76-199 m2, with the buildings reaching up to 25 metres high. The row is arranged into vertically stacked blocks of two or three units, bordering the lake. Single- and double-height cubic volumes define the different areas indoors, in addition to creating private outdoor spaces. Mezzanine areas overlook the verdant landscape, seen through large sliding glass partitions within the volumes.
The single block is situated behind the row of apartments. In addition to individual private terraces, the plan also included a communal rooftop swimming pool and terrace within the apartment block – where the residents could meet and interact – and a private bathing house, located on the lake.
