Støperiet Culture House - Tønsberg(competition entry 2009)
The new building adds on to a preserved industrial building being used as a rough multi-purpose hall for cultural events. The new extension is formed as a functional building that gives respect to the excisting building through its monolithic low-key design.
Cladded with blue steel and it’s simple form, the new building contrasts clearly to the main hall and the complecity of the surrounding buildt environment, visually dominated by a wide variety of different heights volumes, materials and detailing.
In order to reduce the size of the extension, an important part of the programme; The Culture School was lifted out an located as an independent building on the opposite side of the excisting main hall. The forms and materials align with the main addition. By placing the school on ground level in a separate building the functions are given added quailty with its direct connection to the cultural park.
A landscaping carpet made of stone and stripes with integrated LED-lights binds the three buildings together as a common public zone, making the whole area a pulsating and adventurous cultural arena.
