ARTIST STATEMENT:
STOP SHOP DESIGNED BY international lampoon ITEM IDEM
(Cyril Duval & Kalena Yiaueki)
A DELIRIOUS TECHNICOLOR HOLIDAY MIDNIGHT DREAM.
AREAWARE, photographer Keetja Allard, retail consultancy Philip Attar Creative and International Lampoon, Item Idem, ltd. (Cyril Duval & Kalena Yiaueki) were faced with one very important problem with opening a stimulating designer pop-up store at the Port Authority Bus Terminal... How do you challenge all the neon Times Square craziness with new retail ideas without surrendering to the environment?
The answer lays within the environment itself, by maximizing all the surroundings sociological codes & the technicolor neon lights. That is, open the most subliminal, tourist-friendly, light brite neon mash-up of a Christmas holiday gift shop!
Artist ITEM IDEM worked with the theme “A DELIRIOUS TECHNICOLOR HOLIDAY MIDNIGHT DREAM”, translating his own French interpretation of American pop culture gimmicks, international holidays symbolism, and touristy paraphernalia, into a dreamy vision of light and subversive installations. Working with upside down trees, international holiday lawn ornaments, and altered iconic products sourced within the local shopping tourist environment, to create a new enthralled, overfed and over-caffeinated vision of the excessive holiday seasonal madness, all intertwined into whimsical yet subversive displays.
