This is a retirement residential complex, located in
Stockholm, Danvikshem, which is a residential area with some historical routes.
There is a dramatic topography there, which is exciting but at the same time
shades the site because it’s orientation towards south. In the north we have
the river beside the site and one path alongside the whole river from macro
view. Whole of the site and its’ hills is clad with trees. Furthermore you have
views to the site from the other side of the river, and also from boat traffics.
Whole of these characteristics brings out a very special, dramatic, and challengeable
site for the complex.
The main part of the project is the residential area, and
regarding the long altitude beside the site, we may lose the south-light, which
is a significant factor in such a cold climate in Stockholm. So the main idea, for
the residential zone, was to be as far as possible from the altitude. But for
not ruining the important path beside the river, the building starts one level
upper than the ground-level. On the other hand, the public area is completely
meeting the ground and the hill. It has a strong connection with the rocky earth,
since we may not need natural light in this zone, in comparison to the residential
zone.
All of the dwellings were arranged in an order to provide
both south light and view to the river for them. Different plan orders were
studied. Although better and stronger views and visual connections with the
river were possible with having more vertical accesses, regarding the fact that
the function is a retirement house, expenses should have been considered, so
the most economic efficient approach was chosen.
Each flat has the ability to be furnished in two ways. You
have the entrance and the kitchenette as a central core in between, and you can
decide whether to have the sleeping area in the north and the dinning in the
south, or vice versa.
