Reception for an alpine motel in beautiful Marysville, the box-like form sits welcomingly on the street boundary. With an incredibly tight budget this tiny building has had a remarkable and transformative affect on a town still recovering from the devastating bushfires of February 2009.
The design approach called for a bold, joyful parti, which has a simple phenomenological approach. The concept is ordered along the overland flow path across the site, at times a stream flowing downhill towards the road reserve. Bridged by the entry porch and reached by stone steps, the foyer is a place of rest, filled with natural light and dissolved at the northeast corner by full-height glazed walls. The large window-seat opening further frames mountain views. The robust laminated timber pergola is an arbour, shifting geometry towards the main entry, extending up and over onto the roofdeck, a place which is both for celebration and reflection.
