Sthira by HPAD: A Penthouse Rooted in Light, Craft, and Calm
Sthira, meaning “calm” or “steady” in Sanskrit, is a meticulously designed penthouse interior by HPAD, located in the heart of Ahmedabad. The design team has reimagined this multi-level residence as a haven for a family that values serenity, tactility, and craftsmanship. The project places light, proportion, and material at its core, resulting in a home where every spatial gesture is purposeful and poised.
At the core of Sthira lies a distinct spatial experience shaped through a quiet, earthy palette and thoughtful materiality. HPAD's vision was clear: to curate a living environment that balances openness with intimacy, allowing each space to breathe while maintaining a deep sense of coherence and detail.
The home’s spatial journey begins in the double-height living area where full-length sheer drapes filter daylight across Italian marble floors. Here, the play of natural light is both deliberate and poetic. Furniture in oak tones, paired with hand-textured upholstery, grounds the space in warmth and tactility. A custom carpet-art installation by Jaipur Rugs adorns an expansive wall in the room, serving as both a focal point and an artistic signature of HPAD’s ethos: bringing craft and architecture together.
The drama of double heighted volume is softened by a sculptural chandelier that descends into the living room, offering a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal plane of the space. Adjacent, a transparent glass partition demarcates the private family lounge without breaking visual continuity, ensuring a sense of enclosure without disconnection.
Every transition within Sthira is deliberate. The floating cantilevered staircase, clad in a rich veined natural stone, serves as both a connector and a sculptural object. It links the two levels while reinforcing the home’s material narrative.
The lower level houses the son’s bedroom, a study, and the kitchen: each maintaining its distinct visual language of soft stone, clean lines, and tactile richness. The study wall features honed marble with subtle metal inlays; the kitchen, custom-built on-site by local carpenters, is a model of functional elegance.
Upstairs, the master suite reveals itself as a transformative act: two smaller rooms have been unified to create a restful retreat, complete with a walk-in dressing room and a luxurious bathroom. A handcrafted brass and copper panel behind the bed introduces rhythm and gleam, while a sculptural Poliform chair adds a contemporary accent.
Material choices across Sthira are guided by restraint and clarity. Internal walls are finished in Limo Coat textured paint, while select furnishings including sofas, chairs, and dining table are sourced from Dizain Group’s Italian collections. The integration of tactile metal, marble, and oak-toned finishes speaks to HPAD’s belief in quiet luxury.
Notable craft elements include bespoke copper door handles that replace standard wooden ones, adding both durability and visual contrast. Furnishings from Select Furnishing, mosaic by Mandeep Agrawal and carpentry collectively elevate the home's layered functionality.
The design pays attention not just to interiors but to environmental responsiveness. Landscaping is minimal yet intentional, creating outdoor moments that mirror the indoors in their material and spatial language. The palette favours longevity with stone, wood, and copper chosen for beauty and ageing with grace.
Sthira is a study in restraint and refinement. Every surface and silhouette is a conscious decision to evoke calm, from the filtered sunlight in the living room to the handmade mosaic in the bath. In navigating between openness and enclosure, artistry and utility, HPAD has composed a spatial experience of enduring elegance. Through its harmony of craft, proportion, and light, Sthira achieves what its name promises: a home where stillness is never static.
