The Steinway & Sons showroom in the heart of Paris is the first to be opened in Europe by the legendary piano brand for more than 140 years.
Reid Brewin Architects are responsible for the complete interior layout of the commercial space, from the basement to the 1st floor, located at 230 Boulevard Saint Germain. The building designed in 1891 by French architect Louis Gauthier includes heritage-listed elements. The impressive façade wraps around three streets and offers a unique showcase of the spaces designed to present the prestigious pianos. In addition to the exhibition spaces, the project accommodates a 50-seat recital hall and 2 rehearsal rooms at the disposal of visiting artists and music academy students.
The project is part of a creative approach that respects the spatial qualities of the place and the heritage-listed elements of the original building. Reid Brewin Architects addressed all the architectural and technical constraints to develop a sober and elegant venue with generous and bright spaces that present and enhance the premium products.
The purpose was to instill the brand identity in a timeless place; between past and present, tradition and modernity, with the use of noble materials. Pianos require specific environmental conditions in order to provide a high quality sound. The necessary technical equipment (heating, ventilation, lighting and acoustics) is integrated into the architectural treatment of the building as discreetly as possible.
Reid Brewin Architects, together with Paris-based lighting designer Le Deun Luminaires, developed bespoke circular LED pendants, forming sculptural elements that interact with the renovated heritage details in the entrance hall and reception spaces.
This new classic and elegant Parisian showcase is a convivial meeting place where artists and the public can come together to enjoy an eclectic musical program, in line with Steinway & Son's tradition of celebrating arts and culture.
