The competition for the Freedom and Unity Memorial in Berlin was looking for a symbolic form to commemorate the peaceful changes of the Opening of the wall in 1989. This exceptionally strong and peaceful event was to respond with an abstract form, with heroic presence.
UNITY of the STATES
Geological sediments witness history - following this principle the geographic outlines of the states of the Federal Republic of Germany are spatially extruded and stacked on top of each other. The border outlines are an inscription of the multiple european wars and the multitude of small states that existed in German history. Germany's borderlines witness its wars, including the 40 years lasting Cold War with the German seperation, as well as the peacefully gained unity of 1989.
UNIQUE INTERIOR EXPERIANCE
The visitor can enter the monument and can find an almost sacred space which invites to stay. The view is opening towards the top and the sunlight creates its own spectacle inside a rather expressionist space that reminds to Schwitter's Merz installations. The exterior describes the former location of the East - West - German wall are opened up to allow the view to the surrounding context. Over the next years the former city castle and Schinkels 'Construction Academy' are planned to be constructed in immediate adjacency. The momorial becomes an observation tower from which the multiple reconstruction projects can be overlooked, and simultaniously the Statue of Unity becomes a landmark for Berlin in its skyline. The 2-stage competition was cancelled before the results of the first round, due to "insufficient quality of the submissions". Meanwhile it is widely acknowledged, that the large jury was overwhelmed and inoperable.
