Shanghai Metro Line 18 has 26 stations. Represented by Danyang Road Station, it shows the efficient and simple construction of metro stations of the city. The Metro Line 18 passes through Yangpu Binjiang (also known as "Riverside Area"), which is one of the birthplaces of modern Chinese industrial civilization and has witnessed the industrial development of Shanghai for more than a century. The design team created a visual contrast in the space, to incorporate the development course of Yangpu Binjiang into station design, hence turning the metro station into a window that displays local culture and history beyond transportation functions.
For this project, the design team fully considered how to satisfy the functions of metro station while communicating the historical and cultural context of the region where the project sits. Thus, they combined functions and culture with station decoration design. Through a visual contrast of white and black, the space presents the story of Yangpu Binjiang Area in different historical periods, turning the metro station into a readable, warm urban space filled with a cultural and artistic vibe.
With consideration into the basic functions of metro stations, the design team adopted unadorned ceiling to improve the visual height of the underground station spaces of Metro Line 18, so as to alleviate the oppressive feeling and enhance the comfort of passengers. The undecorated ceiling is also convenient for later equipment maintenance. Moreover, through incorporating local culture into the design, the metro stations play a significant role in displaying the city's image.
Besides satisfying functional needs, this project digs into the cultural context to create iconic station spaces. It explores the diversified ways of taking advantage of historical resources, and showcases the profound historical context and cultural charm of the area where the project sits.
