The redevelopment of a tight trapezium-shaped site of the former Wai Yee Hong Chinese supermarket in Montpelier, Bristol, into 24 one and two bed apartments. There is a 3.4 m drop across the site between Station Road and the narrow Cheltenham Lane. The flats are designed as two blocks, a 3 and 4 storey block onto Cheltenham Lane and a 5 storey block on Station Road built up against the retaining wall with two floors below street level. The two blocks are separated by a courtyard, with upper access provided by arched steel and glass bridges, which will become the centrepiece of the development. The architectural treatment is ‘robust contemporary’ with crisp white render above a rubble stone plinth which links the development to its neighbours.
