GBD art district is a new challenge for the growing image of Beijing, a contemporary metropolis that more and more is consolidating its role as one of the most dynamic and innovative cities in the world.
Our strategy offers an innovative always transforming urban scenario, by the composition of an architectural module that sums different features of tradition and innovation in China: “commercial space”, easy to access, “art space” to be seen and “housing unit” as private enclave. Global Communication, high standards innovation, local atmosphere of the historical Hutong, micro scale and macro composition meet together in a vision for GBD, capable to offer both, Identity and Experimentation to the new artistic epicentre of the capital.
URBAN STRATEGY
Some sort of ambiguity lies between the goal of opening up the GBD district and the preservation of its industrial historical status.
For this reason, on the urban scale we propose the definition of two complementary systems: an apparently random MOLECULAR STRUCTURE in the core of the site, memory of the traditional frenzy structure of the Hutong, and the EXPERIENCE WALL, a porous structure on the edge.
The core provides space to the functions that will activate in a second stage the district: retail, business, leisure. It provides, through the definition of one module high fabric, a dense pattern, capable to work as a self sustainable network. The wall, being two modules high, allows bigger gestures in the definition of open and closed parts. For its conformation, position and function, it presents to the outside, as a billboard along the main road, the new iconic identity of the district, holding the ambivalent world of the core. Furthermore, the wall hosts the primary functions that will move to the district: ateliers, galleries and all the urban spaces that will soon enable GBD to perform experimental media, film, digital video, drama, painting, sculpture and avant-garde music happenings.
The two systems therefore, are complementary in the definition of the new image of GBD, a mix of tradition, culture and a visionary contemporary environment, compelling and coherent support for the artistic production of Beijing. Nonetheless, the two structures relate strongly in the process of definition of the plan, being the wall the framework within which the molecular nub can expand and conform to the hierarchy of reuse-demolition of the existing warehouses. This way, the requested adaptability to the development procedure gains a degree of control through the wall. The inner fabric performs its maximal role during day time, with its fast and small scale activities: business, retail and living. The Experience wall, running around the plot, will become a “public ring”, urban scenario of the evening active life of the district and billboard of GBD to the city; a serial collection along its length of all the possible and imaginary performances that the GBD can host.
ARCHITECTURE STRATEGY
Our module frees itself from a “mono directional” relationship with its similars. The simple gesture of “amputating” a perfect parallelepiped shape, generates tension and allows us making the module itself free standing with its iconic power and amazingly glitter by its urban composition.
The “incomplete” shape allows a few strategic rotations of the module making it suitable to perform different roles in the urban layout. Alone or arranged to the extent of continuous unexpected compositions (the wall, the tower), it generates exceptional public spaces. In its standard position, the reduced footprint liberates the ground, allowing multiple configurations of the public space better fitting the plot of the existing buildings.
This strategy allows the preservation of the footprint of the current industrial fabric, yet superimposing a new “floating world”, new iconic tissue of the GBD district and new lifestyle tool for the art scene of Beijing.
When the module flips, the scenario changes. The wider footprint offers a traditional courtyard housing environment and a vertical development for the working program. In a twin composition, returning to the “finite” shape of a rectangle and reducing its demand for interaction, the module performs the scenario of an urban villa, with an exciting inner structure of voids and double height spaces. Finally, when the modules encrust in order to shape the “experience wall”, the scenarios reach a subliminal level in which the urban- architectural configurations become almost infinite, a perfect playground of representation for an innovative art scene, a figuration of a possible dream.
Rules and discipline give power to an undisciplined process in which the new identity of GBD finds its own conformation. Simple row housing lines, cellular systems, visionary towers and iconic walls can perform all at the same time a role in the masterplan, without loosing a single inch of consistency, because all supported by the same assumptions.
Even the materialization of the district benefits of the freedom supplied by the module’s shape, because able to perform, when scaled and assembled, as a brick wall.
This brick wall shapes a vision.
