The Stanley Manne Institute is a new facility at the Bronx High School of Science dedicated to independent research by students following advanced courses of study. The building houses three labs, each able to accommodate 24 people, and adjacent support spaces such as storage, equipment, and a walk-in cold room.
Besides providing space for independent study, the project offers the type of lab environment that students encounter during college internships and in professional settings. The new facility allows students to acquire hands-on lab skills and then perform challenging experiments at a college level. Just as in a professional lab, the spaces are designed to be modular and flexible, as equipment and science requirements change over time. The institute also includes breakout spaces for student collaboration, meetings with faculty presentations, and lectures. The larger multi-purpose room can accommodate a gathering of the entire lab for special events.
