The 4th of July 2015, the Collective Saga organized an event called Stage in Process in Joe Slovo Township (Port Elizabeth). All day long, several activities were organized for everyone : drawing workshops, soccer competition, exhibition, and by night a movie projection.
We also got the chef of the restaurant TWO OLIVES to come and cook more than 200 meals for everyone. The event took place at the crèche the Collective Saga is building within the community, and as a step in its elevation, this event was an opportunity for everyone to meet all the actors of the project. Usually you celebrate only the completion of a building, when everything is done, well-done, clean and shiny.
Indeed, the aim of this event was to celebrate a step, a particular stage of the construction, not its completion. Even if «only» the structure, the roof and the oor were in place, this stage was seen as an opportunity to gather everyone around this community project. It was still under construction. All together we enjoyed the fact that the crèche was still a public space, a platform, a stage open to the community, a chance for everyone to express themselves ! The aim of this event was also to bring some fun and playfulness to this underprivileged and quite harsh environment. Sadly, this kind of event don’t often happen there, and the success of it make us think that we should organize such things way more often. It was also a good opportunity to bring more people from the city to come and discover this area, where they usually rarely go.
For the exhibition we decided to show some pictures of the site, the construction and the community. Some of them were our pictures, and a few came from the photographer Joubert Loots. We also exhibited various texts, written by both the crèche owner and ourselves and drawings showing what the crèche should be like when it
is done.
The movie projection was a great success. The oor of the crèche was completely full of kids, parents and inhabitants and all of them enjoyed a lot the movie Fantastic Mr. Fox (Wes Anderson). We decided to choose a movie understandable by both children and adults. This movie is a fable, in which anybody can recognize a particular human behavior or just enjoy the movie in its current form. It can also be seen as a story about the greed of certain human-beings, showing how far some people can go to eradicate a part of the population considered as « unwanted ». For sure, this movie talks about « living together in harmony » ...
