The 150-seat chapel and 3,200 square feet of classroom space for St. Teresa’s Academy will expand their campus by 11,200 square feet. The task of combining both sacred and secular academic programs, led to a design that balances the importance of these program pieces, exemplifying the core values of the school. Based on a survey of students and faculty, the Chapel must be a soft, feminine, contemplative space of worship flooded with light that has a connection to nature; manifested as a lace veil over glass shrouding the worship space. The classrooms must be technologically advanced and serve as a banquet space when combined; a soft-edged brick form with tall windows responds to existing campus buildings. The joining of the sacred and secular elements must come together as architecture that not only completes the open end of the campus’ quad, but also serve as the gateway building for the campus.
