St Paul’s Primary School Sunshine West is a new vibrant, purpose built Learning Facility which replaces the dated aging portables that supported the schools strong arts programme.
Crosier Scott has designed a building that fully exploits its location nestled between an existing 2 storey learning facility, and a gymnasium shared with Marion Secondary College. The design strategy imbeds principal movement and view arterials to weave the new facility into the fabric of the existing school network. The concept creates a layered porous envelope which is designed to extend the learning environment externally, creating outdoor learning spaces which promote enquiry and engagement with the surrounding learning neighbourhoods. The elevational form is framed with a dominant red ribbon which plays off the stair geometry and layers the presentation of the north and south facades so that it is both arresting and permeable. The architecture is contemporary and vibrant designed to have a distinct identity so that it would be a recognizable hub within the school community.
Functionally, the new learning facility provides for a designated Arts provision on the ground floor and consists of an arts studio connected to a double height under covered north facing outdoor space to extend the studio experience. The adjacent space is a large dynamic multi-purpose performance space interconnected with the studio arts provision and provides access to the large extended under croft of the building through large format glazed sliding doors.
The upper floor provides for a flexible and agile senior students learning hub consisting of 3 general purpose classrooms all interconnected to a large multi-functional special project space, external undercover terrace areas, smaller break-out rooms and toilet amenities. Large format glazed sliding doors enables the first floor to be opened up or closed down for a variety of configurations and increase floor space to accommodate a multitude of large gatherings such as cohort assembly, parents information, examination, and exhibition space.
