Bournemouth Borough Council faced a rising demand for school places following a significant rise in birth rates. St. Michael’s Primary School was identified as a school that could be increased in size with the purchase of an adjacent plot. The existing school was already on a very constrained site in the centre of Bournemouth, and in a Conservation Area surrounded by trees, some of which are covered by preservation orders.
A two storey, 4 classroom block links between the existing school buildings and an existing victorian villa which was converted into School & Childrens Centre accommodation. A 2nd storey of classroom accommodation was then built over an existing single storey area of the school. Along with an extension to the existing hall and to several undersized classrooms there were also extensive internal refurbishments and alterations required.
The design of the main extensions use an existing two storey block as a reference and are clad in zinc and copper with brickwork to match adjacent buildings.
Environmental principles based on other school designs by the practice include natural ventilation using vertical chimneys through the building, heavy concrete structure to control large temperature swings and efficient underfloor heating. Large windows provide daylight with louvres to control potential overheating.
