Can a contemporary arts institution reimagine itself, without purging the past? This was the animating question for SOCA’s proposal for the revitalization of Toronto’s St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts (STLC), an aging Brutalist landmark housing a performing arts theatre complex in one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods. Published in 2021, SOCA’s provocative, inquisitive vision advocating for heritage restoration over a complete rebuild sparked impactful dialogue around the project, redirecting the course of the eventual design competition. The proposal sensitively unfurls its expanded programming—including a blackbox theatre, rehearsal space, back-of-house and offices—along a brick tile-clad vertical extension. By pedestrianizing Scott Street to shape a new civic plaza, and carefully carving out vistas and a rooftop terrace, the speculative STLC redresses the building’s imposing, disengaged character and fosters dynamic connection to the street. The concept responds to TOLive’s new space needs while delivering immense embodied carbon savings, full physical accessibility, and a strengthened relationship between the shared stories and collective aspirations of the STLC’s community.
