The adaptive reuse and addition project to building 49 is a component of 3.8 million SF restorations and redevelopment of the Historic St. Elizabeths Hospital West campus. The new and adapted existing structures of the building 49- formerly Construction Shops building- will house multiple functions, including DHS Guard Support, GSA Facility Management, a fitness center with an indoor basketball court, and a small business area. The design of the new addition focuses on keeping the modern architecture of the new fitness center in harmony with the historic architecture of the existing building. But inside a contrast is created between the new design of the interior and the existing building to celebrate the layered history of the building. Multiple sustainability strategies have been incorporated in the building including Photovoltaic and solar thermal panels mounted on the rooftop of the basketball court in the new addition, rain water harvesting system and green roofs
