Children Need Space
St. Bernard Catholic School was overwhelmed by a large student population. This North York, Toronto, education facility required twelve portable classrooms to meet student needs. Unfortunately, the existing school was situated on a tight urban space and the portables took away much of the existing playground.
ATA conducted a feasibility study analyzing current, intermediate, and long-range needs (as student enrollment was predicated to grow even more). After careful review, by the Toronto District School Board, of ATA’s options, the decision was to build the first phase of an eventual new school. The new facility was also designed to accept a third story. ATA’s signature use of color on angled planes articulates and enlivens the façade. The result is a progressive, child-friendly vocabulary that offers a framework for future development of the school site.
