The brief required the creation of a new single storey rear extension to 1950’s house that would accommodate new Kitchen, Dining and Living space.
The challenge was to configure the Extension in such a manner that ensures that the space formed between the old & new is usable and does not become wasted space as has happened historically. What was originally a very tight entrance hallway has been opened up into the former Garage to create a generous entrance hallway complete with a wheelchair accessible shower room to accommodate future changing needs of the occupants.
A new single storey Extension complete with a generous bank of south facing roof-lights accommodates the new Living spaces and captures the sunlight and southerly orientation. An internal passageway provides access from the front to the rear of the house via a new Utility.
The external envelope of the existing house was upgraded to high insulation and air-tightness standards in excess of current Building Standards.
