"The design brief for this project called for additional space to accommodate extra people for church services, and provision of improved facilities for weddings and meetings as well as restorative work.
To minimise intrusion onto the historical building and character while also creating an experience of openness, a lightweight laminated timber portal frame was used which is simply bolted onto the existing church. The expressed frames reference the existing brick buttresses, which together with the articulation, scale and timber material, achieve a complimentary relationship with the existing fabric rather than one of domination.
Selection of clear finished cedar cladding in a small shiplap profile was chosen to compliment the scale of the existing brickwork, while use of sandstone cladding and paving, laid in a modern pattern, ties the new work with the old, complimenting the existing sandstone of the church."
