“The Rozzano Sports Centre is an excellent neighbourhood architecture, proportioned but not humble, an example of a ‘public luxury’ that should be - though it is not – a standard.” Domus, February 2022
The sports centre is located to the south of Rozzano, a town on the outskirts of Milan where the area is mostly meadowlands with some agriculture and a pre existing irrigation system. The project involved the construction of a small sports centre to host amateur and semi-professional football matches and local events.
The building is divided into two volumes: a “cube" which houses the bar and a long low building for the athletes' changing rooms.
The two volumes are distinguished by the use of different materials. The "cube" is covered with iridescent ceramic tiles in different sizes while the changing room building uses laser-cut perforated sheet metal panels along the northwest front which were designed and made to measure.
THE METALLIC FAÇADE
The result of the overlapping of a double layer of drilled sheet metal generates an interesting façade design and produces a three-dimensional and dynamic Moire effect.
This corridor receives natural light both from the perforated panels and from four glass skylights. Light from the skylights is reflected onto the yellow walls and is diffused, accentuating the decoration of the façade panels. The artificial lighting of the corridor was designed to reproduce the same effect in the evening hours.
METALLIC FINISH TILES
The façade of the “cube” is clad with Casalgrande Padana Diamante Boa tiles in the five different diamond patterns available. They are arranged vertically to create a varied surface that reflects the light and colours of the surrounding landscape. The silver color compliments the blue color of the perforated metal panels. The metallic iridescent tiles enrich the façade and vibrate with colour and light.
