The project is composed of two shimmering ‘rock-like’ objects, that sit anchored to the lower concourse floor of Brookfield Place, seemingly formed by the downward ‘waterfall-like’ force of the escalator which descends from Santiago Calatrava’s Allen Lambert Galleria above. The project’s geometry is a response to the challenge of a tight adjacency to the escalator and a site condition which demands visibility from 360 degrees and from above. The split form of the shop is conceived to address the dynamic pedestrian movement through the multi-level interior streets of Brookfield place, and optimize natural light from above. A generous, angled walkway running between the objects forms the core retail space and diverse sightlines through the concourse.
The thin shelled objects are made from steel, diamond-patterned mesh, that hover above mosaic tiled platforms that sit in contrast to the stone-patterned floor of the concourse. The moss-green platforms are strategically raised to discreetly run services and facilitate the shop’s open quality. The mesh shells, illuminated from within, provide a translucent beacon-like quality that reflects against the mirrored finish of the escalator. To achieve the complex angled forms of the shells, the metal mesh sheets were cut, welded, and manually bent to create the gently curved edges and apexes of the objects.
The larger of the two objects is used as the staff preparation area and central service counter. The white oak counter is bookended by two small concrete bars that invite shoppers from different access points to sample or stay-a-while. The smaller of the two forms is fully enclosed and houses a custom glass refrigerated case. As one nears the shop from any direction, it becomes apparent that the two shells are filled with artificial greenery set in custom tiled planter boxes, which is reflected in the mirrored surfaces of the enclosed equipment.
