A
prototype split-level house for a sloped site, 2007
A gently sloping site located in a single-family
residential area with strict building regulations was the starting point for
the design. These restrictions, and the requirement to provide
direct ground-level access to the main entrance on the north side as well as to
the southern garden entrance, led to the logical conclusion of a split-level
house with a pitched roof. The massing was conceived as a compact monolithic grey
form with clean lines, no roof overhangs and concealed rain gutters. The inset openings for the main entrance, the terraces
as well as the windows are clad with anodized aluminum in a golden tone. The building is divided into four different functions.
From the main entrance on the north side, one set of stairs leads a half level
down to the living areas on the south side and another set of stairs leads up
to the sleeping areas located on the level above the living spaces. The six-meter cantilevered sleeping level provides a
generous column-free glazed area that spans the entire length of the living
spaces and provides access to the garden on the south.
