The project concerns the renovation of a 30sq.m duplex, of an 80’s apartment building, in the area of Vouliagmeni, Athens. The main goal was the maximisation of free space in the lower floor, having as a fact that the bedroom would be in the upper floor. As a result, an effort was made to design tailor-made furniture that would have multiple uses.
On the lower floor, the main element of the composition is a furniture that combines the kitchen with the spiral staircase of the apartment. Their merging restrains the imprint of the stair and in parallel maximises the countertop’s surface. Moreover, the kitchen is extended towards the exterior space, following the same architectural language. As a result interior and exterior space become a visual whole, giving the impression that the living area is larger. Regarding the spiral metal staircase, it was constructed from scratch, with minimal dimensions and profiles, in order to limit its presence both spatially and visually. In the same level, a sitting furniture was designed that takes advantage of the skewed wall and also incorporates storage space.
On the upper floor, one finds a more private area that consists of a bed, a wardrobe, and a bathroom. The bathroom is split into two parts, one for the wc and one for the shower. Their oppositional placement, in combination with their metal and glass folding doors, enable their use either as a bigger continuous bathroom space or as smaller separate spaces. Lastly, the overall materiality opted for both floors was shades of light beige, with different textures depending on the material, in order to achieve a homogeneity that doesn’t allow any element to stand out.
