Space to Learn is an innovative, state-of-the-art learning centre in Hartlepool. The vision for Space to Learn was to challenge conventional teaching methods by providing an ‘experimental teaching laboratory’ where new technologies, teaching styles and methodologies could be trialed by all schools throughout Hartlepool ahead of the investment in their own schools.
Internally, the building comprises a suite of learning spaces, which can be flexibly reconfigured using a system of lightweight and soundproof acoustic curtains. The flexible infrastructure also includes a suspended lighting and ceiling rig on a flying system. Internal spaces can be altered to suit the functions within, creating intimate spaces for one-to-one teaching or a large open-plan volume for seminars or performances. The facility is also equipped with the latest technology to demonstrate how it can support teachers in personalising the learning experience for young people.
Space to Learn provides a fantastic opportunity to train teachers to the highest standards, stimulate young imaginations and encourage the region’s children to achieve their full potential. This ground breaking project has already attracted significant amount of local praise and attention; and was ‘highly commended’ at the 2011 Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Awards in the 'community benefit' category.
