‘Space Invaders’ is a conceptual study on the relationship between the inhabitation pattern in the city and its energy use. It is a facade concept for a single person dwellings which uses binary information of electrical switches within each residence as sources of information to control the appearance of it. The façade is entirely fabricated as collection of pixels which houses colour changing LED lights of its ourter face, and the energy use of individual units are liable for the colouration of specific locations of the lights which repeats and mirrors to tile the entire facade. The mirror and tiling idea was borrowed from the character of retro computer game, ‘space invaders’ which can be created by mirroring random binary patterns on the grid. Giving a symmetry and order can turn a random information to a recognizable figure. In this project we have used 4x4 grid which can generate 65536 different patterns.
The facade therefore uses the random information of collective pattern of energy usage within the building and translates into 655536 different light wallpapers which changes in real time.
