In this kitchen we created a natural flow of space by using special design elements to unify the space and enhance it’s functionality. We designed a 10’x4’ double sided working island and placed it parallel to the house exterior wall, creating an open working space. The cooking space is also enhanced by a large glass door facing the outdoors, mingling interior and exterior space. The presence of natural light, view to the outdoors, and no dead-end space allows the kitchen island to become the natural focal point for multi-functional purposes: a place to have a conversation, the morning coffee before the busy day, gathering of friends and family in the evening.
An overhead floating ceiling with recessed lighting spans across the space to the supported pendant lighting fixture above the dining table, thus linking the kitchen and dining space. Once again the visually unobstructed space fuses what used to be traditionally defined spaces, creating a sense of flexible second nature space. The floating ceiling also reinforces the link between form and function.
