The discovery, in 2003, of a Saxon ‘princely burial’ of national significance provided Southend-on-Sea with an unrivalled opportunity to create a nationally significant tourist attraction in the town.
In March 2009, AEW won the contract to design a 20,000 sq.m. Museum on a site with a prominent south facing, seafront location. The elevated nature of the site ensured the architects capitalised on the Thames Estuary views making a vital connection to elements of the exhibition within.
The concept, to create a building that is as much a part of the landscape as it is a container, helps provide a truly unique and individual presence within the site but as much as it seeks to fit in, it naturally and unashamedly stands out.
