Southcoast Center for Cancer Care is set on a wooded site that
offers peaceful and private respite. The building takes advantage of this
location, incorporating nature into the design through large windows that bring
in natural light and provide scenic views. The exterior incorporates warm and
inviting materials, such as wood, brick, and stone that matches classic
colonial stone walls existing on the property. The landscape includes a healing
garden and pathways that feature native and sustainable plants.
The two-story building is
organized around a great hall. The first floor houses radiation oncology,
diagnostic imaging, patient amenity space and administrative offices. The
second floor houses medical oncology, pharmacy, physician offices, and
laboratory services. A monumental stair connects the two spaces.
The interior design creates a spa-like
environment encouraging patients and families to relax and focus on healing. A warm neutral palette and wood language define
the public spaces. Color accents are incorporated on changeable elements.
Patient choice and
amenities such as a café, boutique, and Wi-Fi are emphasized. The infusion bays are a mix of private, semi-private and open. Patients
have control over lighting, privacy, and shade. A green roof, visible from
infusion bays, adds to the overall feeling of health and wellness.
Patient
corridors are lit with soft, indirect lighting. Major intersections have
drop-pendant lighting to assist with wayfinding. The project was the recipient
of an 2012 Regional Award of Merit from the Illuminating Engineering Society.
