South Hill Park by Belsize Architects is the remodelling and extension of a ground floor apartment within a Victorian semi-detached house in Hampstead. Located in a conservation area, the property has been given a lively new identity while respectfully retaining original key features.
The extension was inspired by the site geometries, where the house meets a series of garages zigzagging along the boundary wall. Those angles are mirrored in the plan and roofline of the extension, which stretches into the garden around a new terrace. A garden store has been reclaimed as a second bathroom, while an awkward external area has been brought within the extension as a third bedroom. The extension is clad in dark zinc, which contrasts with the original building. Full height doors and windows open onto the terrace, and fill the extension with light.
Reclaiming previously underused space has transformed the layout, providing valuable additional high spec bathroom and bedroom space. The existing bathroom was upgraded, while a remodelled kitchen sits beneath a faceted ceiling that picks up the extension’s angles and enhances its spaciousness.
Period features have been sensitively restored while a new timber floor offers a subtle contemporary identity. Carefully chosen furnishings and a light decorative palette complete the transformation.
