Project ContextThe move of the UTM library to its new home in 2006 freed up 5,800 gross square meters of centrally located space on the South Building’s main (second) and third floors. The Campus and Facilities Planning study recommended that all spaces in the former library wing, not just those which served a library function, should be considered when planning and programming the future use of the west wing of the South Building. The vacated library space is immediately adjacent to the Meeting Place and presented a unique opportunity to consolidate and expand UTM’s student services. These were scattered throughout the South Building and were under accommodated to serve the needs of a greatly increased student population. The space vacated on the third floor is intended for consolidation of academic and administrative departments, providing the opportunity to meet their needs in a location more suited to their programs. The future Phase Two renovation proposed for the adjacent double height central core of the South Building (the Meeting Place) will create a sense of place that will serve the campus as both a thoroughfare and a destination of choice for students seeking services within a new Student Plaza. The interface between Phase 1 and the Phase 2 renovation comprises a third floor corridor which overlooks the second floor Meeting Place and is not part of the scope of Phase1. This requires the Phase 1 design to maximize the interface design opportunities for Phase 2 and beyond.Program ObjectivesThe final mandate of Phase One was to renovate the space vacated by the library on the third floor to provide expanded and consolidated accommodation for the departments of Sociology and Geography, additional faculty offices, UTM Administration offices and appropriate facilities for the UTM Police for a total of 3279 gross square meters. In spite of the deep floor plate and relatively low ceiling height, Objectives include an efficient, functional plan, upgraded architectural design quality, maximum possible daylight and views for staff offices, LEED silver certification, clear wayfinding and optimization of interface with the existing building and with proposed future phases. In response, the design team initiated the following components:1. Esplanade and Galleria – A redesign of the interface corridor at third floor level to provide frontage, identity and natural light for the new programs and entrance to the Galleria. The Galleria joins the Esplanade to the centre of the floor plate.2. A Central Garden Atrium has been created out of a former central stair and provides a leafy relaxation zone and terminus to the Galleria access route. 3. The Hierarchy of Skylights is the most essential part of the radically altered quality of the new building interior. Size, shape and structure vary from large and dramatic to almost invisible.4. Identities have been created for departments by use of light, colour and material to provide visual character and enhance wayfinding.5. Swing spaces allow flexible use of offices between departments.
