The Paola Local Council wished to have a fountain in the main square of the Town, and this proved to be a challenge. We wanted to create a contemporary water feature without contrasting too much with the historic architecture of the square. We avoided introducing a new material by designing a fountain which would be made from the same material which was to be used in the new surface of the square. The fountain seems to be an explosion of tiles, frozen in time. Some of the tiles will be used to commemorate important people who were born in Paola. In the same way that these people (the Sons of Paola) emerged from Paola, the tiles are emerging from Paola's main square. While the tiles seem to be floating in isolation, each of them is part of either of three structural branches with the tiles cantilevering outwards.Status: Approved by the authorities, work to commence
