Located in a tea plantation in Wujiadai Village, Rizhao, China, Songyi Theater transforms an ordinary pine forest that was originally to be cut down into an art space. The space consists of a set of tree-like installations and a set of artistic outdoor seating furniture in nature——the Beauty Cushion.
The design concept is to form a deep dialog with nature. The main part of the theater consists of closely connected sculpture trees, which are silver in color, showing different light color changes at different times of the day. The Beauty Cushion seat centers around the eight pine trees in the venue, modeled after a poem by Chinese literati Su Shi. Its organic lines become an elegant contemporary artwork in the pine forest, also provide space for people to sit and chat.
The project much follows the designer‘s on-site work rather than drawings. Throughout the construction process, designer’s body is in repeated dialog with the site, working with the craftsmen on the ground, and continuously feeding back into the design.
The Song Yi Theater can be used as a stage for art performances, as a public art space for wandering, daily relaxing, children playing, and as an open space where all natural elements and people are invited into the poetic scene. he Songyi Theater just bridges nature, art and people together.
