The Fuxing Park has been known as "Shanghai's foremost French-style park" since the late 19th century for its tranquility and sophistication. In Shanghai, this park has played a crucial role in shaping its urban landscape and local culture as one of the earliest modern public spaces in China. After extensive renovations and upgrades in 2023, Songsong Restaurant approached Super Rice Architects for the creation of a contemporary social sanctuary within this historic park that redefines traditional notions of dining establishments while seamlessly integrating with Shanghai's vibrant lifestyle.
Super Rice has endeavored to create a multi-functional dining space for the Songsong Restaurant that seamlessly blends Shanghai's exquisite architectural appeal with its historical richness.
The design process aimed to evoke the grandeur and allure of Shanghai's early 20th-century international metropolis, ensuring that every guest who enters the restaurant experiences it. The project not only responded to business requirements but also offered a profound interpretation of Shanghai's past prosperity and the city's contemporary vibrancy.
Our approach to designing the building's façade involved creating a thoughtful exchange with the surrounding environment. Instead of a confrontational approach, we aimed to express the building's dual nature. Our design merged classical elegance with modern minimalism, as evident in the selection of materials, colors, and embellishments. The precise management of geometric shapes accentuated the building's functionality and dynamic aesthetics.
The left-side beverage display area in the façade design beautifully complements the central light column, creating a captivating play of light and shadow at nighttime. The central revolving door merges classical and modern designs, providing seamless and efficient circulation in bustling hours. Not only does the revolving door improve energy efficiency and comfort by minimizing thermal exchange, it also lightens the workload of the service staff. On the restaurant's rightmost side, the bi-directional window design connects the interior with the urban public realm, offering guests a chance to peer out at the plane trees and fully immerse themselves in the park's ambiance.
At the heart of the restaurant lies the dining area, flanked by a bar, wine cellar, private rooms, and a DJ booth. This clever arrangement fosters an ambiance of conviviality and relaxation, where the delectable fusion of food, drinks, and music delights all the senses.
Taking inspiration from Shanghai's Art Deco movement of the 1930s, we have infused modern techniques to reimagine its intricate details.
A meticulous examination was undertaken to identify the original building elements that required restoration and preservation. During this process, "Super Rice" employed delicate techniques to seamlessly blend the old with the new, paying homage to the city's past while embracing contemporary design. This creation not only honors the historical significance of the Bund in Shanghai but also symbolizes the city's ever-evolving nature.
Our team strives to capture the essence of Art Deco in the selection and application of materials. Drawing inspiration from the era's bold geometric shapes and simple materials, we highlight the beauty of simplicity, roundness, and linearity.
Our design incorporates a combination of wood, glass, marble, and stainless steel, each with unique historical and cultural significance. The wood tone reflects the era's historical connotations, while the green jade mosaic embodies the warmth of oriental culture.
We have also incorporated elements of 20th-century industrial machinery and automotive design, highlighting the relationship between the past and future, new and old, smooth and textured, refined and primitive.
At the heart of our design philosophy lies a commitment to selectivity and flexibility. Our SongSong Restaurant project exemplifies this philosophy through our ingenious creation of diverse seating environments that cater to a range of dining needs.
For instance, we have designed secluded private rooms in the corners for guests who value privacy, ensuring a secure and comfortable dining experience.
Additionally, our central square tables are designed to be flexible, accommodating small groups as well as transforming into elongated tables for larger gatherings. These architectural strategies reflect our deep contemplation of space, diversity, and practicality.
Regarding spatial planning, the central core area was designed with multifunctionality in mind. For example, during DJ events, the tables and chairs in the center can be easily moved aside to convert the dining area into an energetic stage space.
With the use of adaptable colored lighting fixtures, this area can quickly transform into a club-like atmosphere. Additionally, as the music's tempo shifts, the variation of lighting effects brings a dynamic commercial vibrancy and visual allure to this limited space. The SongSong Restaurant's design creates a portal between reality and illusion, evoking a sense of the past, present, and future.
