LEA Architects served as Architects and worked with the Somerton Librarian and the Yuma County Library District and provided designs & architectural services for the new Somerton Library and major additon to the old Libary. Designs were prepared for the circulation desk, display cases, typing carrels, signage, security systems and assisted in the furniture selection, delivery and installation. Staff and user computer locations were incorporated as well. Library features include: reading and stack space for the patrons, a central circulation and information desk, public/multi-use meeting and reading rooms, staff offices and work room, and reference areas. A design Charrette led by Larry Enyart, FAIA, LEED Fellow was conducted on site with a compendium of user ideas in the LEA design. The Somerton Public Library Addition created a distinguished front entrance and added new amenities for the community, including a teen center, larger children’s area and increased study room space. The larger library will also have a new multipurpose auditorium that will be open to the community for use. LEA created a secure outdoor reading court with a lighted yellow brick road and patterned theme of the agricultural fields of Somerton. The reading court is covered with open beams and shade is created from the perforated metal above a giant outdoor fan. LEA was instrumental in designing and coordinating built-in furniture and selected all vendor furniture purchases working with the library staff. Extensive work on integrating a major library addition into a public setting was accomplished in a compressed time frame
