This small addition to an existing 1920’s English home is based on a rigorous understanding and observation of the scale, proportion, material and details of the existing residence which informed the architectural language.
The client’s aspirations were to create a comfortable room that was adaptable to a number of different scenarios, a space that was adept to function as a dining / living room by day and without too much effort convert to a ball room by night.
Part of the scope of works was to peel back the existing lawn and garden beds to accommodate the addition and create a flat outdoor entertaining area with terraced garden beds that were easily accessible.
The interior is a composition of warm whites and parquetry flooring.
Colour is provided by the books and photo albums in the Library as well as the perimeter English box hedges and garden beds affectionately sewn with roses, crab apple trees, fox gloves, holy hocks, espalier pears and a magnolia tree anchoring the client’s admiration for the English garden and way of life.
The room responds purely to the site features; solar access, outlook over and access to the garden.
