Solomon Wong TECH CUBE is an educational technology lab on the campus of Taipei American School. Servicing students from primary school to high school. In the school’s tradition of participating in robotic competitions, and looking towards the future of technology education, the school commissioned KHL Architects & Planners to design this high-level blending of robotics and innovative use of the Solomon Wong Tech Cube.
In the search of a site on the existing grounds of Taipei American School, TECH CUBE was situated between a baseball field and sports field with limited space and a 2m height difference on the site, designing a new building in this location without disturbing the school activities became the first challenge for architects to overcome. By elevating the building, activities are allowed to continue on the ground floor, still linking the outdoor activities and creating a new gathering space for students.
Due to the ever-changing nature of education, flexibility is the key in designing TECH CUBE, with a 5.8-floor height and a wide-span structure, allow teachers and students to have the freedom in lectures and discussion without the confinement of typical classroom space. Upper floors are designed to be a studio-like space with equipment and spaces for hands-on experiments; lower floors are purposed for primary school students with discussion spaces and lighter equipment. Designing a playful way for primary school students to travel is a slide situated in the lobby adding a joyful element to the space and bringing this continuous movement onto the sports field.
In order to coordinate the circulation flow of various groups of students, different vertical connections are created, allowing students to move around the building without disturbing one another. Following the context of the school, school colors’ are used to coordinate the color scheme and using traditional red brick to connect the lower floor exterior with the campus. TECH CUBE is connected with the adjacent campus building with a sky bridge, by going through the library and onto the sky bridge, students journey to their designated spaces via various colorful stairs using the school color to create engaging vertical connections. By defining the school skyline with a bright red stroke on the sky bridge, new material is introduced onto this campus. With a diamond-shaped curtain wall façade allowing daylight to fall deep into the building opening up space with playful light and shadows throughout the day. With the diamond shape curtain wall façade reflecting the sky, creates an illusion of being part of the sky whilst camouflaging the cube, maximizing transparency from the inside and light from the outside. This design makes the Solomon Wong TECH CUBE not only stand out from the surrounding but also be part of the campus and expresses itself as a modern architecture as being this new age technology education center.
Solomon Wong TECH CUBE being an innovative building both in function and form, designed with a living building in mind, with the infrastructure and an open plan to allow changes to cooperate into this educating space as time changes. Supporting students with an open and welcoming space, new equipment to match the students’ interests and capabilities, to learn and grow in this institute.
