Sustainability
of this house announces itself from the street by allowing the roof solar
panels to pop out and form a front entry canopy. Its basic design is that of a
Venice loft with a long open kitchen (and exposed wood ceiling) that anchors
the main living areas and is counter balanced by a glass roll up garage door
that opens up the entire living area to the outdoors.
Sustainable
materials include bamboo floors, locally made urethane resin sinks, Caesar
stone counters, radiant heat, exposed polished concrete floors and double
glazed low – e doors and windows and recycled glass mosaic tiles.
Inexpensive fiberboard is used artistically as a stair rail.
Solar village is a prototype extended family compound where
sustainability reaches into the realm of affording housing options for an
extended multi-generational families. The 3 families in this prototype
can avoid getting into their cars to drive to day care or work and the concept
of multi-generational living solves many issues such as child care, elder care
and home offices --all amenities that are becoming increasingly more relevant
to current day life.
