This Soho offices of this criminal-justice foundation had to remain open as it doubled in size. Consequently, the project was as much a staging challenge as a design opportunity. So in their old floor, we surgically streamlined their open offices and expanded their reception area. But on the new floor, we tore out all the cramped rooms, exposing cast-iron columns and heavy timbers. In this vast new space, a line of freestanding ash-paneled cubes house the kitchen, copy room, and coat closet. We recessed a reception banquette into the first cube, lined in knitted ribbon.
