The ‘City of Sound’ is a part of the ‘City of the Senses’, a finalist at the JAD International Design Competition in Seoul, South Korea, November 2009. The aim of the design is to create a sensory experience for children to develop their senses & create a better academic future for themselves, in particular through sound and music. Softspaces of Edinburgh look between, in, and around structures and envelopes of the city’s captures spaces, thus this intervention takes advantage of the hidden, unused spaces of the city. The design makes use of an existing music hall hidden in the unused alleyways of Edinburgh and physically exposes it to the city. This creates an acoustic softspace which breaks the existing building facade, flows into the street, and engages with the public. A new facade acts as a permeable wall, a casing for the building acting as a musical instrument. With different levels of permeability, the programs of the building change throughout the day, as do the effects of the building on the city, and likewise the city on the building. The project aims to harness the potential of children at a young age, and develop this throughout their lifetime. A ‘sound playground’ attracts children to learn about music at a young age, while a music school and recording studios, help them develop, and ultimately a stage, to perform on. This breaks down the project into three categories throughout a child’s development: playing, practicing, and performing.
