Winning competition proposal for Socrates Sculpture Park / Architectural League of New York Folly 2013: tree (wood)
competition proposal:
Trees provide one of the most abundant natural materials: (wood). Man has been drawn to it since the beginning of history. Our proposal is to build a wood structure that occupies the same space as the tree canopy in Socrates Park. Different, yet the same material in the same spatial dimension. One is the source, and one is the end product. However they co-exist as one, each meshed and uninterrupted by the other. This architectural folly is about the ideals of Nature and Man-made coexisting in our increasingly crowded world. This simple structure is composed entirely of 2x4 studs and nails bought from the local hardware stores. The trees fill it. A single chandelier will hang inside among the leaves and chime in the gentle winds. Afterwards, all the materials will be donated to Build It Green, just down the street. Then it can have a new life of recycled use within our neighborhood.
