The basic project consists of a pavilion-like structure
where all program elements occur. A
semi-public zone where community would feel invited to participate. Since the program works as social catalyst,
the project imagines a real integration between the events going on in the
center and the Santa Cruz neighborhood, therefore working on its maximum
catalyst capacity. The public park
becomes part of the Legacy Center, as well as the Legacy Center becomes part of
the park. Since it is a modular structure, the first phase for September would
consist of a partial implantation, and for the second phase, the whole pavilion
would be complete. After some intense
research in Cost-effective materials, it was confirmed that the cheapest and
commonly used lattice beams should be the right option. In this way, we could have a bigger common
area for the Center. The indoor
activities would be made with ceramic blocks, or possibility of arranging the
manufacture of adobe blocks in-site. As
a second skin, the project intends to re-use the football fencing in site for
climbing plants. There would also be
used common aluminum fixed louvered doors.
As the ceiling for indoor spaces, it is suggested wooden beams and
chipboards with water-proof treatment.
It is suggested a possible partnership with concrete area firms in the
use of the leftovers of the mixer trucks that usually have to dump their
leftovers in the landfills. This would
seriously have a big impact on the ecosystem.
Although the project for the Legacy Center seems very
complex and challenging, at the same time, it offers a great opportunity of
allying architecture and social change in its maximum capacity.http://openarchitecturenetwork.org/projects/5958
