A part of the London Festival of Architecture, Social Cinema was a series of temporary cinemas, each installed for one night only into the existing urban fabric of a route between Exmouth Market and the Millennium Bridge. Films about, set in, or commenting on London and its architecture are stunningly projected upon the city itself.
The architectural fabric of the temporary cinemas is improvisatory, playful and subtle. At each location, buildings become screens, pallets ‘borrowed’ from Smithfield Market make temporary bleachers, steps or plastic crates from local pubs and restaurants become seating, owners of nearby buildings generously give power, or loan their houses as projection booths, neighbours join the audience, and volunteers with torches act as ushers.
