The “Southwest” district of Yerevan is the most problematic urban district in that it has an extensive transportation network, environmental degradation, and insufficient urban planning. The district was built in the Soviet era and was devoid of any centralization of a social environment. Though it lacks centralized urban planning, people created commercial spaces and opened up specialized small shops. As it stands, it is a very chaotic, terribly dirty and unpleasant space, but it is centralized in a very unique place, which is close in proximity to the main airport and small villages with extensive agriculture.
Concept/ Extended Green Radials
The proposal aims to improve the already existing and well-functioning trade and commercial center by developing social and green spaces around it. There are two main zones in the district that can be used as a ground for the social center: one is the green hill partially occupied by the market and another one is the big boulevard with commercial shops. The evolving new composition for commercial spaces involves extending “green radials” over the hill. In order to preserve the existing tradition, the open-air market will be left unaltered and will make up the tops of the “green radials”. “The green radials” will consist of green social and cultural spaces spread along the boulevard, as well as partially underground. A defunct factory building near the boulevard will be developed into a business center to support to the development of district.
