The Sobela Ocean Aquarium uses marine currents as an interpretive framework, guiding visitors through a diverse aquatic collection.
Starting at a tropical shore, the path follows a warm current into the deep ocean, transitions through a cold current and ocean forests, and ends at a cool Pacific coast. Architectural features like changing light quality, spatial variation, and physical descent enhance unique exhibits, engaging emotions and sparking curiosity about the ocean. The project’s goal was to showcase aquatic species from various global biomes in Kansas City. The aquarium now houses nearly 8,000 animals across 34 habitats, including a large, 400,000-gallon shark tank. Each exhibit is thematically designed within an energy-efficient building envelope.
