Fully
embedded within the landscape, Snow Drift
provides a comfortable shelter for individuals on the Assiniboine River Trail
to escape its winter weather without intruding on the white, clam terrain.
Whether skating, skiing, or walking the trail, occupying a frozen river is a
unique way to experience nature. Snow
drift enhances that experience by taking a naturally occurring phenomena -
the snow drift and allowing people to occupy the volume inside. A prefabricated
birch-plywood scaffolding is placed on the frozen river for snow accumulation,
allowing the form to gradually change with wind direction. The interior is
lined with birch-bark, a historical technique used by Native’s in canoe
building, to keep melting snow out and provide wind insulation. Overall, Snow
Drifts adaptive form and sympathetic use of material offers a rich visual and
tactile experience, without imposing on the landscape.
