Smokestack at Magnolia Brewing is a one-of-a-kind brewpub and barbecue joint tucked into a shiny new brewery in San Francisco’s post-industrial Dogpatch neighborhood. The building was originally a factory owned by the American Can Company, the corporation that manufactured the world’s first beer can.
The stunning 1930's decor is a highly textured game, a mystery that clues customers into the historic sweet spot that occurred for butchery and imbibing culture in America; a time before Supermarkets, as the country freed itself from the constraints of prohibition and rebounded from the great depression. Hints of this past life are everywhere -- informative pre-war newspapers are revealed behind wilting wallpaper ("BACON, 2-1/2 cents p/Lb") and a mysterious second floor door is labeled "DICTATING" - a reminder of a time before texts and emails.
The experience is exciting, elegant and primal. Customers feast on exceptional BBQ at communal tables, drink world-class craft beer being made just outside the window, while beasts are broken down in sight, beside a flaming pit, on an 18 foot butcher block.
