The “Smart is green” house project is part of the International Building Exhibition (IBA) in Hamburg. Since 1901, the IBA has been held in different urban and rural regions of Germany to draw attention to the latest developments there and take an active part in them. The building exhibition is not an exhibition in the usual sense of the word. It tends rather to deal with architectural and urban issues of the respective region in a long-term research and development phase. In addition, the IBA is concentrating increasingly on the ecological tasks of building. IBA Hamburg
Designing the future of the city in the 21st Century: this is the task of the IBA Hamburg with the slogan “Building the City Anew”. Hamburg is using the IBA as an opportunity to consider the continuing structural transformation in the manufacturing sector and bundle city growth qualitatively. At its geographical centre, the city has a great development potential.
At the centre of plans is the extremely heterogeneous urban district of Wilhelmsburg, to the south of the inner city of Hamburg. Due to its insular position between the two great arms of the River Elbe and an extensive industrial land-use zone, this central area has not been properly developed. In particular the port areas and the old industrial sectors with their waterfronts and their proximity to more rural areas offered a unique development opportunity. Plans have propelled the previously little noticed district of Wilhelmsburg into the sharper focus of Hamburg’s urban development. Smart Material Houses
The ‘Smart is Green’ house project is a module of the ‘building exhibition in the building exhibition’ in Wilhelmsburg. In 2009, the IBA invited international teams of architects, planners and investors to develop innovative proposals for housing that is ecological and sustainable in the following categories: Water Houses, Hybrid Houses, Smart-Price Houses and Smart Material Houses. The IBA Hamburg sees the project as ‘Case Study Houses’ of the 21st Century.
